Our Story

Back in 2016 when Thomas was buying an engagement ring for his girlfriend (now wife), he had no idea where to start. He visited a few stores, shopped around online, and read numerous online articles about how to buy a diamond. At the end of this he was much more knowledgeable and knew generally what he wanted, but was still unable to answer the question, “how much should I be paying for this diamond?” Searching online retailers brought up endless lists of diamonds, but there was no way to tell what was a “good deal.” Price would increase as he searched for larger diamonds and better color and clarity, but how much was the increase in price truly worth?

Being a nerdy graduate student at Stanford, Thomas created a complex regression model using hundreds of search results that could predict the price of a particular diamond he was evaluating. Since then, several friends have asked him to evaluate diamonds for them using his algorithm.

PJ taught himself how to program in iOS during college in 2013 and has created numerous other apps such as Which is Bigger & Vine Spectator for iOS and
Tap Tempo, & Tiny Temp for macOS. They teamed up to create Diamond Price Predictor to allow anyone to evaluate the price of a diamond without the need to run complex statistical modeling software.

As much fun as running this app is, it’s not our day jobs. Thomas is currently a student at Stanford University, pursuing an MD and PhD in Biophysics. PJ is currently Head of Product of Family at Life360, and previously worked as an iOS developer at Uber. They met as floormates freshman year at UCSD, where they both studied Bioengineering.
