Diamond Buying Tips

Buy the loose diamond (the stone) separate from the setting (the metal ring it sits on)

Many stores will sell pre-assembled rings with the diamond already on the setting. While this convenience allows you to take the ring home the same day, it’s much harder to intelligently evaluate the price and how much you should be paying. You can buy the setting separately and have any store or goldsmith assemble it for you.

Visit a store in person first

Seeing an actual diamond close up will help you decide what characteristics are important to you. What’s the difference between an E and F colored diamond? Can you tell the difference between a VS1 and VS2 diamond? These questions are best answered after seeing a diamond in person at a store.

Don’t buy in store

While it helps to see a diamond in store first, you will almost always find a better price online. The reduced overhead (fewer employees, no physical store space to rent) results in lower prices. Our algorithm uses diamonds from online retailers, so you will likely find that most diamonds in a store are overpriced.
